Hiccup remedy

Grandpa M has the hiccups.

His favorite remedy is drinking ice water from the far side of the glass.  Given the amount of curiousity and/or ridicule this tends to elicit, he attempted to find some privacy in the pantry for this particular activity while here.

It didn’t work…

I am a farm-raised homeschooling mom. I take great joy in making nutritious food that inspires people to take seconds. Thirds, anyone? We are a God-fearing, Christ worshiping family that enjoys good friends and good eats. If the kitchen is clean and the living room carpet is visible, then that's a nice bonus.

  1. could you explain it more?

He’s gotten a glass of ice water and instead of drinking from the nearest edge of the glass (like we all do), he is drinking from the edge farthest from him (which requires him to bend upside down, so that the water spills into his mouth).

I don’t know why it works; I always get water up my nose when I try.

That’s so cute!! For the average, normal hiccups (I don’t know about those brought on by hysteria or other causes), I remember reading in one of my psychology books about a 100% way to end them, which kind of makes all the other ones (drink an entire bottle of water without stopping, etc) make sense! They did it in the lab and this method never failed to end hiccups, and I’ve never had a problem using it, either. The question is generally whether or not the subject can actually pull it off!

The reason it works is because it paralyzes the diaphragm or something … I don’t know, details are foggy – and I can’t remember it exactly – but basically it’s this: Take a huge deep breath, as much as you can, and hold it for ten seconds. At this point, inhale MORE, until you feel your ribs breaking, and hold it for another 7 – 10 seconds! Once you exhale, they should be gone.

Most people who try it don’t breathe deeply enough, or can’t do the second inhale.

They have tried EVERYTHING. He’s had them for over 18 months now, and has seen a ton of specialists. Next up are the neurologists. He tried every home remedy out there before they started going to doctors, and nothing worked. The inhalation part isn’t the problem either; this is a guy that spent years playing french horn. He knows how to inhale!

So frustrating for them. Now I get paranoid whenever I get the hiccups.
